What is climate attribution?

Climate attribution is the science of answering a deceptively simple question about a specific extreme event: a heatwave, a flood, a storm, a drought: how much did human-caused climate change make it more likely, more intense, or both? Instead of the broad statement that "the planet is warming," attribution puts numbers on a single event by comparing the world as it is today, warmed by greenhouse-gas emissions, with a counterfactual world in which those emissions never happened. Drawing on observations, reanalysis datasets and climate models, it separates the fingerprint of climate change from the natural variability of the weather, and expresses the result as a change in the odds or the severity of the event.

Why does it matter?

Extreme events are how most people actually experience climate change:  not as a global average temperature, but as the flood that hit their town or the heatwave that closed their schools. Attribution turns those abstract, planetary trends into concrete, local, quantified statements that individuals and institutions can act on.
